An encounter with a psychotherapist

Last few days, I came across a pre-presentation by a doctor, she's actually a psychotherapist and hypnotist by profession. Just knowing her position made me shivered and wondered, will she hypnotize me and the rest of us who attend the presentation into engaging her for our project? Haha, just a silly thought ( tapi logik, kan?).

Her main focus was to manage stress among professionals, and I was quite interested in her few theories which mainly obtained by research and also by experience.

Sexy photo

Some interesting scene during the presentation was when she showed a super sexy photo of an American woman (not sure American ke British, but orang putih la for sure), and of course, we, the attendees, mainly Malays and Muslims, were disturbed by the photo. My boss proposed her to change to other pictures as obviously, the picture was inappropriate indeed. Guess what was her reaction?

"This picture serves its own purpose. When you are actually disturbed by the sexy woman photo, then you're actually under stress and could not control yourself to get distracted".

Ah, pulak dah. All of us exchanged smirks and rolled eyes, some even burst into giggles. Rupanya camni therapist berfikir. I don't want to judge her but let me just light you with some details. She's at her early 50's but still looks radiant and `modern', with fashionable clothes and what nots. You get what I mean.

My boss counter proposed by suggesting the doctor to change the picture, at least to the more decent one. And what was her response?

" Oh I see, this organization seems to be very protective of its employees. Don't you know they've seen worse picture than this in their daily life?"

Ahh sudah..memang la some of the audience had seen worse pictures tapi itu bukan persoalannye...aih.Finally after some justifications, we reasoned by saying at least we're not going to highlight this kind of picture in a formal session, hence the proposal of changing the picture. And at last, the doctor agreed to change the picture for her real presentation later. This argument about a single picture merely took twenty minutes! Wait until our big boss hear about this. Haha.

Therapy of gratefulness

One interesting concept highlighted by her is the way we recite our doa after prayers. She bluntly pointed out that most of us are not sincere in our prayers, and some even don't know what to say/ask to Allah during doa. Most of us just follow the way our ustaz/imam recites the doa in segregation prayers, while actually there are various ways to convey doa so that it is meaningful and impacted us as well.

Instead of the conventional way to recite prayers, i.e

"Ya Allah ya Tuhanku, aku berdoa agar aku dikurniakan kesihatan yang baik, kurniakanlah aku kemudahan dalam urusan, kurniakanlah ketabahan dan kekuatan, jauhkanlah aku dari kemungkaran dan kesengsaraan.."

She actually suggested a new approach in doa recitation, called therapy of gratefulness. By modifying a little bit the above example of doa, the new version is as below :

"Ya Allah ya Tuhanku, aku bersyukur kerana aku dikurniakan kesihatan yang baik, aku bersyukur kerana aku dikurniakan kemudahan dalam urusan, aku bersyukur kerana aku dikurniakan ketabahan dan kekuatan, aku bersyukur kerana dijauhkan dari kemungkaran dan kesengsaraan.."

It worked fantastically for her patients as it also influenced our sub-concious mind into believing that Allah had actually granted our prayers, and we will be more optimistic in our upcoming life. Our Ultimate Creator will eventually grant our prayers, but just the matter of time. Just imagine if we did this every day, won't it change our perception and the way our mind perceive the world? I guess it would :) The Westerners also starting to highlight the concept of `gratitude' every time before they start their day, much similar to Islamic concept of berdoa lepas bangun tidur that shows our gratitude to Allah. They actually adopt our practice!

I guess there are other interesting points in her presentation, but let me just stop here. I don't want to kill the limelight :)

Cheers, salam Ramadhan dan salam Aidilfitri :)

P/S : Interesting tak my profession? I'm actually doing this as part of my formal task, and will be evaluated in my KPI..err hehe :)

Tag akhirnya

Akhirnya terbuka jua hati nak buat tag setelah meng ignore beberapa tag sebelum ini. Nie Kakak Bijoux punya la nie.. since dia dok jauh dan kemungkinan tak balik raya I pun buat la kan for the sake of her. Haha (bajet kan saye, kak??) ok here goes :

1) First airplane ride
When I was 16, KL - Langkawi via MAS.
Masih ingat sebab masa tu beristighfar sepanjang 45 minutes ride tu dan kecut perut masa take off dan landing.. muka pucat sampai tak berani nak minum air oren yang stewardess bagi. Ni pengaruh tv banyak sangat laa nie.. asyik tengok cerita kapal terbang terhempas huhu

2) First time I gave birth
Not married yet :P

3) First time overseas
Masa umur 11 tahun to Singapore. Adalah sangat excited and rasa best gila sebab dapat round Sentosa Island and naik MRT dia tu round city (eh betul kan MRT? ke apa entah abbreviation dia). Masa tu kan KL takde LRT lagi :)

4) First time living away from your family
Away tapi taklah jauh sangat, setakat masuk sekolah asrama penuh dalam sejam setengah dari rumah. And was there for five good years, love every moment of it. I'm such a hostel type.

5) First time I had a real job
Intern tak kira kan? Never had part time job..
Real job must be in the hectic electronics manufacturing company for four months, early this year..good experience though.

6) First time I felt I was fat
Tak pernah kot? Eh pernah, when I was in Form 1. I ate too much chocolate masa tuh, since my parents always provide me Dairy milk chocolate supply without fail every two weeks. Memang gemok la masa tu.

7) First time in love
Erm, skip lah soklan ni (hehe)

8) First time I felt I was beautiful
When I was in kindergarten, when I got to wear this gaun kembang hijau (my kindergarten takde uniform, so boleh pakai sesuka hati). Sebab my mum selalu tak bagi pakai gaun kerana anaknya ini sangatlah `baik' tapi kekadang I memberontak so kena la bagi pakai. Btw I ada sebijik je gaun kembang pun.. (haha kelakar la good old days. .:)

9) First time at the cinemas
Tak tau kenapa tapi sangat la ingat. Tengok cerita Fenomena (yang Ramona Rahman berlakon tu, tak silap lagu tema dia Isabella) masa umur 7 tahun. Actually my maid masa tu nak tengok so my parents suruh I temankan kakak tu pi wayang la.. tak silap first time for her too :) Tapi ni dulu2 la, sekarang I tak layan wayang2 nie huhu

10) First time admitted in hospital
Don't think I've ever been admitted. Thank God for my good health, alhamdulillah. <- same je jawapan ngn kakak Bijoux, malas nak tulis so copy paste jer. Hehe~

Ok tu je, sapa ada kelapangan and nak buat sila laa, kalo taknak pun takpe..

Paths walked through..

Assalamualaykum and good day.

Ada yang meminta saya menulis tentang pekerjaan saya sekarang..

OK, begini. Most of my respective readers knew that I came initially from a technical background, yes, I graduated as an Electrical & Electronics engineer, majoring in Control System and Instrumentation. But currently I'm doing management work , with only minor technical exposure involved for my daily job. However, we are encouraged to undergo plant familiarization attachments and we can still go for technical skills training eventhough we're not particularly doing hands-on work. And I'll be staying in my current job insya Allah, only for one or two blessful years before I actually pursue my career as a real engineer. That's how the position is designed, just for brief management exposure for the newbies.

Well, how I got stuck in this position is a very interesting question. I'm not really agree with the word `stuck' because its not that I hate the job.. I am not particularly madly in love with my current job either. Besides it is destined by Allah for me being here, I think the way I managed my answers in my interview session landed me to where I am right now.

Well back then, during the interview, I was so screwed up with my FYP, I can't even think straight. I considered myself as a miserable engineer-to-be, and was just not meant for engineering job. Ok, don't let me start on how I end up in my university, taking a course that I dreaded for long. I knew this is my destiny, and surprisingly I enjoyed my stuff after a while.

So you know, back in the interview room, I had a mixed feeling, whether to state that I prefer technical or non-technical field.I always enjoyed my side-work in campus i.e organizing events, joining societies, meeting people etc. so I guess I'll be more suitable doing management work...and stress as a final year student adalah tidak membantu langsung.Hence, I told the interviewer that I want to experience both, technical and non-technical field.I love management work but I was too reluctant to let go my technical knowledge just like that. So, ta-da! Here I am. Ni lah apa orang kampung cakap.. be careful on what you wish for, because you might as well get it.

Before my current job, I had a temporary job that really made me appreciate my technical skills and knowledge. I was forced to learn things fast, back-to-back training sessions and worked in hectic, buzzing engineering labs really kept me energetic, especially as I was involved in my most favourite field, electronics. So after a few months and finally managed to keep up with the pace, and kind of liking it, well then, the offer for my current job came. I had no choice but to accept as it is, I consider it as a bless in disguise.

OK enough on the background story, I didn't intend it to be too long. Sorry, but if I did not include it nanti you guys tak paham pulak.Huhu.

My first impression of doing management work was come on, of course it won't be as hard as technical work. The work must be less, and I can go back at 5pm every day. Setakat management work kan, there's no technical papers to crunch, or engineering conferences to attend, or technical reports to be submitted. Totally heavenly features.

But after a month, I knew I was totally wrong. Yes, it is not mind-boggling in technical sense, but management work means you have to manage your tasks, do multiple tasks at once and make sure everything is smooth flowing. And you are responsible for each part of it. And mine is even crucial as it is related to people's assessments, appraisals and career progression. Any tiny details missed might cost a fortune to someone. Another challenging part is you have to deal with people! Yes, people with different attitudes, different demands. Interesting yet tiring.

I've to work around the clock, sometimes I do need to stay back for a few hours to get the job done. Maybe it is also because I need to cover other person's job, as currently there are a vacant position in my team.

So people, whoever preferred management work just because it looks easier in the surface, think again. All work either technical or not, is equally busy. But it also depends on your nature of work and position too, ada je my colleagues who go back at 5 pm every day, ada jugak yang go back at 10 pm. It's all depends.

On a positive side, my current job is quite exciting,as we managed to meet the high ranked people in the company, the MD/CEOs, the specialists in their respective engineering fields, the advisors and team leaders, resource persons as well as other important people. They aspired people and their wisdom is something that is treasured for life. Also, I still need to organize events, one after another and travel a few times in a year every now and then. So takde la I bosan stuck in office je every day, doing the same job :)

OK so much about my work experience, just an ordinary one. I know other people had their own exciting stories to tell on their current job. But mengambil kata-kata kakak Bijoux ; "Everybody thinks that everybody else has got a life story that is great, more perfect and way more exciting".

No truer words spoken :)

Have a nice, blessful Ramadhan everyone!

Down with fever -_-

First and second day of Ramadhan, I was down with fever. A whole complete package with bad flu/cough/sore throat. Tapi puasa tetap puasa ok. Never thought having fever during Ramadhan was quite a challenge, since you could not take the medicine during the day hence you're expected to recover much later than usual. And was quite irritated with the medicine package that said `makan empat kali sehari'.How can I actually do that?? Well, the nurses were just doing their job anyway.

So besides lied down covered with warm blanket and slept until my head spinning (well, you could not do much activities anyway), I surfed and bloghopped everywhere, looking for delicious pieces of news that I've missed every now and then (due to piling work and lack of internet connection after office hours).

So do click on the followings to read my favourites:

(if you can't access MalaysiaKini, do click here and read the excerpt on the August 27 post)
(this one is very good, an eye-opener)
If you find other interesting blogs, don't forget to share with me :)
Salam Ramadhan~
